Be careful with the Pixel 7a: it also has a 6.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 2400, but its screen runs at 90 Hz. Don’t assume its parts will fit the 8a just because they look similar.
The Pixel 8a’s OLED screen works with the optical fingerprint sensor
The Pixel 8a comes with a 6.1-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2400, a variable refresh rate of 60 to 120 Hz and Gorilla Glass 3. The fingerprint sensor is optical and reads through the panel, so any screen replacement also affects fingerprint unlocking.
The complete OLED screen for Google Pixel 8a is currently available in OLED quality. Before installing it, check whether the unit comes with the fingerprint sensor fitted. Google’s replacement module includes it, but many replacement screens do not. If that’s the case, you’ll need to transfer the sensor from the old screen or fit a new one and calibrate it.
Calibration is carried out using Google’s Pixel repair web tool, with the phone connected via USB in Fastboot mode. Repair forums report cases where a new sensor cannot be calibrated and the issue can only be resolved by transferring the original. The rated capacity printed on the part is 4404 mAh at 3.87 V (17.04 Wh), so seeing either figure does not mean the battery is incorrect. It’s currently available in Premium quality, a compatible alternative that is usually cheaper than the original part.
The Pixel 8a is the first Pixel to show battery health and the number of charge cycles in Settings. Google recommends replacing the battery when its capacity falls below 80% or after around 1000 cycles, so you can check the actual wear before buying.
You’ll need to remove the rear cover to access the battery. It is attached to the chassis with fairly strong adhesive, and teardown reviews identify it as the hardest part of this model to repair. Make sure you have new adhesive ready for both the battery and the cover.
The Pixel 8a’s matte plastic rear cover can be removed without a laser
The Pixel 8a’s rear cover is made of plastic with a matte finish, not glass. It is attached to the frame with adhesive around the entire perimeter and around the camera bar. It can be separated using gentle heat and picks, without a laser, and also gives access to the battery, so replacing both parts at once means you only need to open the phone once.
