The Google Pixel 6 (internal codename oriole) launched in October 2021 alongside the Pixel 6 Pro, with the Pixel 6a arriving a few months later. Before choosing a part, check your reference and bear in mind two features of the Pixel 6 that affect repairs: fingerprint reader calibration and a charging connector soldered to the board.

GB7N6, G9S9B and GR1YH: three codes for the same Google Pixel 6

You can find the exact code under Settings, About phone, Model and hardware. The version sold in Europe is the GB7N6, the unlocked global version. The G9S9B is for US carriers and includes mmWave 5G, while the GR1YH is the Japanese variant. Some product listings also show G9S9B16, which is linked to the same model.

These variants differ in their radio components, not the chassis. The Pixel 6 screen replacement is listed as compatible with all three references. The models you could mistake it for are its siblings, which have different dimensions:

• Pixel 6: 6.4-inch OLED, 2400 x 1080 and 90 Hz. This is the model in this category.
• Pixel 6 Pro: larger 6.7-inch panel, QHD+ and 120 Hz. It is not interchangeable.
• Pixel 6a: smaller screen and a different under-display fingerprint reader. It is not compatible either.

The Google Pixel 6 has a 6.4-inch OLED with the fingerprint reader underneath

The original panel is a 6.4-inch FHD+ OLED at 90 Hz, and the Pixel 6 was the first Pixel to feature an optical under-display fingerprint reader. So when you replace the panel, you are not just replacing the display and touch function; you are also working on the unlocking system. The OLED screen assembly for Google Pixel 6 is now available in OLED quality, the same technology as the phone’s original screen.

On this model, the reader is attached to the back of the panel with adhesive. The part supplied by Google has it integrated, but does not include the plastic front camera bracket, which must be transferred from the old screen. Before fitting it, check whether the screen includes the reader. If it doesn’t, you will need to remove the original from the broken screen, and its flex cable is easily damaged.

The Pixel 6 opens from the front: the screen is bonded to the chassis with strong adhesive and provides access to almost all of the internals. If you are replacing another part in a repair shop, check the condition of the panel first, as a cracked OLED can break completely when removed.

The USB-C connector in the Google Pixel 6 is soldered to the mainboard

In the Pixel 6, the port is not on a sub-board with a flex cable: the USB-C connector is soldered directly to the mainboard, the same board that houses the Tensor processor. This determines the type of replacement part required. You are not replacing a screw-mounted module, but the connector itself, which must be desoldered and soldered back onto the board.

The USB-C charging port for Pixel 6 is now available in Original quality. Fitting it requires a hot air rework station and microsoldering experience, so it is mainly intended for repair shops with the right equipment. If soldering is not possible, the alternative is to replace the entire board, which is considerably more expensive. Also remember that the screen must be removed before you can access the board.

The Google Pixel 6 fingerprint reader is recalibrated using the Pixel Repair Tool

Google says that after replacing the screen, the Pixel 6 reader must be calibrated using its web-based Pixel Repair Tool, which revalidates the sensor and its security keys. The process involves a factory reset, so the phone needs to be backed up before the repair.

Calibration does not always work correctly. Since launch, there have been reported cases, including at authorised repair shops, where the tool says it cannot find the device’s specific calibration software and the fingerprint reader stops responding. Various technicians report that this issue occurs more often when using the tool on Windows than on a Chromebook, so it is worth having one available.

Will a Pixel 6 Pro screen work in a Pixel 6?

No. The Pro has a 6.7-inch panel with a different resolution and refresh rate, and its chassis is different. The Pixel 6a screen will not fit either, as it is smaller.

Do I need to erase the phone for the fingerprint reader to work after replacing the screen?

Yes. Calibration with the Pixel Repair Tool ends with a factory reset. Back up your photos and data before opening the phone.

Can the Pixel 6 charging port be replaced without soldering?

Does a US Pixel 6 G9S9B use the same replacement parts as a European GB7N6?
