The iPhone 17 Pro Max is a complete departure from the 16 Pro Max. Apple has moved on from titanium and returned to a forged aluminium unibody. The rear is now almost entirely metal, with just a Ceramic Shield window beneath the camera area. It dissipates heat remarkably well (inside, a vapour chamber distributes the A19 Pro’s heat throughout the chassis), but there is a downside: when the phone takes a knock, the body itself bears the damage. Installing the iPhone 17 Pro Max rear cover frame: what to know before opening the phone

Let’s be clear, because nobody tells you this so directly. Replacing the frame is the most extensive repair you can carry out on this iPhone. You have to transfer practically everything from one chassis to another: the screen, battery (on this generation it is screwed in, with a fair number of screws), motherboard with the cameras, Taptic Engine, speaker, USB-C connector, rear glass window with the wireless charging coil, and the button flex cables. Since the back no longer opens in the same way as before, almost everything has to be removed from the front.

Here are some tips the iLevante team always gives:

• Discharge the battery to below 25% before starting. If it is punctured by a pick, the risk of fire is much lower.
• Be careful when applying heat and using picks around the left edge of the rear glass window, where the wireless charging flex cable runs. If you damage it, MagSafe charging will be slow or may stop working altogether.
• You will need new adhesive strips for the screen and rear glass window, as there will be no proper seal without them.
• Keep an eye on the camera shims when transferring the camera. If the old frame had them and the new one doesn’t, or vice versa, the camera may end up misaligned.
• Use good-quality precision screwdrivers and sort the screws by area. There are many, and they come in different lengths.

Compatibility: European-version iPhone 17 Pro Max

An important detail: in the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico and several Gulf countries, the 17 Pro Max is sold with eSIM only and has no SIM slot.
