2716mAh iPhone X Battery

When Apple introduced the iPhone X in 2017, the most noticeable change was the edge-to-edge OLED display. Inside, there was another equally important change. The logic board was built in two levels, stacked on top of itself, and occupied around 70% of the space used by the old iPhone 8 Plus. This space was used to house an L-shaped battery made up of two cells, with 2716mAh, 3.81V and 10.35Wh. This is slightly more energy than the old model's battery (10.28Wh), in a significantly smaller body.

Our iPhone X battery retains the same architecture and capacity. Its reference is APX0004, and it is compatible with models A1865, A1901, A1902 and A1903. To find out which model you have, simply go to Settings > General > About and tap the model number.

OEM quality in the iPhone X battery: what does it mean?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. An OEM part is manufactured to the same specifications as the original component: rated capacity, voltage tolerances, dimensions, connector and protection circuit. This means the battery integrates with the phone's power management system just as the factory-fitted battery did. In everyday use, this translates into stable charging, reliable percentage readings and protection against overcharging, overheating and short circuits.

When should you replace the iPhone X battery?

Apple designs its batteries to retain 80% of their original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles. With normal use, this amounts to approximately two years. Any iPhone X still in use today will have far exceeded this figure, and it will usually show.

The most common symptoms are:

  • It suddenly switches off with 20 or 30% charge remaining.
  • It loses a significant amount of charge overnight while not in use.
  • It slows down during demanding tasks, such as using the camera, playing games or browsing with many tabs open.
  • It becomes hot while idle.

The slowdown has a technical explanation. Since iOS 12.1, the iPhone X has included Apple's performance management system. As the battery ages, its internal resistance (impedance) increases and it can no longer deliver current peaks. After the first unexpected shutdown, iOS limits the processor to prevent it from happening again. Cold temperatures make this effect worse.

You can check the battery condition under Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If the maximum capacity is around 80% or the significantly degraded warning appears, it is time to replace it. With the iLevante.com iPhone X battery, the phone returns to its official figures: up to 21 hours of talk time, around 12 hours of internet use and fast charging to 50% in 30 minutes with a USB-C Power Delivery charger.

Swollen iPhone X battery: a warning sign that should not be ignored

Due to the age of the model, the iPhone X is one of the phones in which swollen batteries are most commonly seen. It can be recognised when the OLED display separates from the frame, the phone rocks when placed on a table or the rear glass bulges. In this situation, the best option is to switch it off and stop charging it. Do not try to push the display back into place either, as a deformed cell could be punctured. Once removed, the old battery must be taken to a recycling centre.

Installing the iPhone X battery:

The replacement has a medium level of difficulty. Someone with some experience will take between 40 and 60 minutes. Unlike models with a Home button, the iPhone X battery cannot be removed without dismantling several components. The display must be fully separated, and the bottom speaker and Taptic Engine removed to reach the adhesive strips. So you do not need to purchase anything else, each unit includes new adhesive strips and a free tool kit.

  1. Prepare the battery. Discharge it below 25% and switch off the phone. A charged lithium cell is more dangerous if accidentally punctured.
  2. Open from the bottom edge. Remove the two 6.9mm pentalobe screws next to the Lightning connector. Warm the perimeter with a hairdryer to a temperature that is safe to touch, then lift the display using a suction cup and opening pick. Do not insert the pick more than 3mm, as the display flex cables are on the right-hand side.
  3. Disconnect before continuing. Disconnect the battery connector before the display connectors. Take note of the position of each screw, as there are Y000 tri-point and Phillips screws in several lengths, and mixing them up can damage the logic board.
  4. Remove the strips patiently. Pull them slowly, keeping them close to the surface and at a low angle, winding them around tweezers. Each one can take between 15 and 30 seconds. Take extra care with the last one, which is next to the Face ID hardware: if this module is damaged, only Apple can repair it. If a strip breaks, a few drops of isopropyl alcohol under the cell will soften the adhesive. Never lever against the battery.
  5. Fit the new strips correctly the first time. Align them along the edge of the battery before removing the protective film. Once stuck down, they cannot be repositioned.

There is one detail to bear in mind regarding water resistance. The iPhone X has an IP67 rating from the factory, but this protection is lost when the phone is opened. We therefore recommend fitting a new adhesive display gasket before closing it.

Once finished, it is advisable to calibrate the battery. Charge it to 100% and leave it connected for a further couple of hours. Then use the phone until it switches off automatically and charge it again without interruption. This allows iOS to adjust the percentage reading from the first cycle.

iOS warnings after replacing the iPhone X battery

This is one of the most frequent questions, and the answer is reassuring. The message “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple battery” was introduced with the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. The iPhone X predates this restriction, so with the battery installed correctly, the system recognises it normally and the battery health section continues to work.

If, after the repair, Face ID repeatedly asks you to move the phone up or down, the most likely cause is that the dot projector or a flex cable in the upper section has been disturbed. First, check that the front camera connectors are properly seated.

The iLevante OEM iPhone X battery is supplied with adhesive included and a tool kit. It contains everything needed to give a phone that has been used for years the battery life it had during its first few months.
