Replacing the iPhone 13 Pro Max screen: what you should know before opening the phone

This repair can be carried out at home, provided you take your time. There is one detail that hardly anyone mentions and which causes many enquiries after the repair. The sensor assembly is attached to the upper rear section of the original screen: the proximity sensor and infrared illuminator, which form part of the Face ID system. This flex cable is paired with your phone's motherboard, so you must carefully remove it from the old screen and transfer it to the new one. If it is damaged during the process, Face ID will stop working and no replacement screen can fix it. Handle it with extreme care.

The earpiece speaker, on the other hand, is a separate component on this model and does not affect facial recognition.

1. Prepare the phone. Discharge the battery below 25% and switch the phone off. This significantly reduces the risk if the battery is accidentally punctured.
2. Remove the two pentalobe screws (6.8 mm) located on either side of the Lightning port.
3. Heat the edges with a hairdryer, keeping the temperature below approximately 80–100 °C, to soften the sealing adhesive. Place the suction cup near the bottom and insert a plastic pick into the gap that opens.
4. Open the phone like a book towards the right. The flex cables are located on the right-hand side, so do not put pressure on this area.
5. Disconnect the battery first and then disconnect the screen connectors. Each metal shield has screws of different lengths; arrange them on a sheet of paper so that you do not mix them up.
6. Transfer the sensor assembly, connect the new screen and test that everything works before closing the phone: the image, touch response in every corner, Face ID and proximity detection during a call.
7. Clean away the old adhesive residue, reconnect the battery, refit the metal shields and close the phone by pressing around the edges.

Messages and normal behaviour after installing the iPhone 13 Pro Max screen

When you switch the phone on, iOS may display the message "Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple display". A Parts and Service section will also appear under Settings > General > About. Apple displays this warning for any screen that has not been processed through its official repair programme. It does not lock the phone or affect everyday use, and after a few days it will stop appearing on the Lock Screen.

You may also notice that True Tone and automatic brightness are disabled. This can happen even with genuine screens installed outside the official repair network. Repair shops resolve this using a programmer that copies the old screen's data to the new one. For Face ID to work normally, the phone must have iOS 15.2 or later; update it before starting if you have not already done so.
